Binary package hint: udev

25-iftab.rules is missing from Gutsy applied with latest updates as of now. Changing interface name in /etc/iftab no longer works as expected.

This is as intended.

/etc/iftab is deprecated, and will be modified during the development release to carry a comment saying that it no longer has any effect.

You want to modify /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules instead

I can confirm exactly the same problem as described in bug #121092. The only NIC in my desktop is named eth2, while eth0 and eth1 are for two none-existent e1000 cards. Attaching 70-persistent-net.rules...

seems like 75-persistent-net-generator.rules was unable to generate the correct entries in 70-persistent-net.rules until yesterday or so. now it can do this, but if you already had the problem with the "wrong" device numbers, you have to fix it manually in 70-persistent-net.rules.
