Bug Description

This appears to be a corollary to a previous post (61595) about 6.06 updates disabling the sound, but the fix offered there is not relevant as far as I can tell. When I installed 7.04 from disk onto my Gateway laptop (see http://www.gateway.com/retail/mt6452.php for specs), I am able to hear startup sounds, etc. When I install the latest 60 updates, this sound capability is disabled and programs such as rhythmbox do not work. I did a reinstall to ensure the updates were the culprit and they apparently were.

Any suggestions on how I restore my sound or, if I need to reinstall, which updates I should refuse?

thanks

More info for you guys:

This time I installed *just* the security updates from the set of 63 updates I was offered for 7.04. This also disabled my sound, so it seems that the culprit lurks somewhere therein.

Thanks,

Matt

And one more thing. I did not install the following security updates at the time of the sound shut-off:

gimp
gimp-data
gimp-python
libfreetype6
libgimp2.0
libnspr4
libnss3
samba-common
smbclient

Maybe this will help you narrow things down?

Hi again,

I really don't know if my posts are helping or just a nuisance at this point, so I apologize in advance if they are the latter and solicit feedback on my netiquette.

That being said, I would ignore my previous two posts. Once again, I reinstalled 7.04, and this time I accepted only the non-security-oriented updates that the Update Manager offered me. And once again, this disabled my sound. I've reinstalled and it's working again, but am afraid I'm leaving my system vulnerable to evil idiots by not installing the security updates. Advice is appreciated.

Matt

The linux kernel provides drivers for various pieces of hardware including your soundcard. It sounds like one of the kernel updates is some how disabling sound on your laptop. In which case you could update everything but the kernel.

Thanks, Brian. In fact, I did just that by installing with <apt-get upgrade>
and the sound is working fine now. I am only worried that I am more
vulnerable to attack without the security updates. Are my worries justified?
Should I avoid all kernal updates?

take care,

Matt

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
