Bug Description

Having set up a HP Printer in xubuntu 6.06.1 (PPC), most Programms were able to print using cups.
But trying to print from within gqview, it said 'SIGPIPE: Error printing'
Console output led me to the error: There was no default printer set.
lpstat -t
confirmed that.
I had to add a default printer using
sudo lpadmin -h localhost:631 -d $printername_from_lpstat

After that, everything went worked well.

Maybe there is a possibility to integrate that into the default setup routines for CUPS? Would be much easier for the users.

The setting of the default printer should be done by the printer setup tool. It seems that gnome-cups-manager does only set a default printer if the user explicitly demands it. gnome-cups-manager is not maintained upstream any more and will be replaced, most probably by printerdrake:

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/printerdrake

printerdrake always sets a default printer.

Changed in gnome-cups-manager:
status: New → Confirmed

Xubuntu does not have gnome-cups-manager installed by default.
CUPS expects that the system administrator sets the default printer.
I believe Xubuntu should include a user friendly printer setup tools for SOHO users which sets the first printer you install as the default printer, printerdrake is a good candidate.
Marking cupsys task "Won't Fix".
