Bug Description

Ubuntu 7.04 ( clean install )
amd xp 1700+
nvidia card

this thing happens very often, almost daily
and if it does, it repeats itself a few times very quickly

i use firefox - but it happened in the passed also with other browsers -
, i navigate or click a tab or a page loads and then suddenly either the computer totally freezes ( i have to restart )
or i get automatically logged out as user and get to the user log in screen and have to log in again

so i am having this problem in ubuntu 7.04 but had it also with the other version 6.10 etc.

please request any information that you might need and where to find it
thanks

Ubuntu 7.04 ( clean install )
512 Mb RAM
AMD XP 1600+
NVidia Card 64Mb

I'm with the same problem.

But, I think the problem is not with Firefox; maybe it's with NVidia Driver.

I reproduced the error doing the following:

- Launch Ubuntu
- Immediately start Firefox (or immediately do the next step)
- Open the file system Folder (in Graphical mode)
- Scroll the page.

Then the computer totally freeze. This was done 5 times, in sequence, and had the same result.

After that, I deactivated the NVidia Driver and repeated the steps above. The system automatically logged out.
I logged in and repeated the tests. Nothing happened.

I hope this can be useful.

where do we go from here ?
should we file a bug somewhere else ?
who maintains these drivers ?

I am having the very same problem on an AMD 64 HP Pavilion laptop. It happens very frequently to the point of not being able to use Firefox at all. Also, using Firefox arbitrarily causes the CPU to scale to its fullest and this falls back to normal after I close Firefox. I just installed Iceape and so far this seems to be working okay. Not sure what is causing this but it is very frustrating to be frequently logged out when using Firefox.
Thanks

Bob Fourney (robert-fourney) wrote :

I'm also seeing this in Fedora, running the most recent releases and updates. I'm pretty sure I don't have the NVidia card. This is an older gateway, probably an Intel video card?

Firefox seems to be the only offender, other graphical programs don't cause the logout. I also hear the fan kick on and have firefox slow down for no apperant reason, so the CPU overloading by firefox may also be going on. Opening and closing different tabs seems to make it (the logout issue) worse, but it'll happen with just one tab and one browser (no activity on other workspaces/desktops).

Can anybody recommend a good browser? I don't have any recent experience w/ anything other than firefox.

tnx

I have the same problem as Mr. Fourney above, using Ubuntu Gutsy and Firefox. I have an ATI graphics card and am using the ATI drivers. My problem is exactly the same as decribed above, the CPU overloads constantly when using Firefox and also causes the fan to kick in. I tried using Epiphany but the problem is still the same. This problem is so annoying that I am now using Arch Linux with Firefox without any problems. In the past I also tried Debian Etch and Lenny without any problems (using Icewease). It does not also seem to happen with Open Suse 10.3 Beta version.

Any suggested fix to this will be very helpful.
Thanks
Preeth.

Hi All,

This bug was reported a while ago but there hasn't been any recent activity. The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. It would be helpful if you could test the latest Hardy Alpha release: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. Thanks.
