gusty freezes right after login

Bug Description
on a fresh install of ubuntu 7.10 Gusty Gibbon amd64 when i try to login the computer it freezes and just displays a white box in the upper left corner and stops loading i went into a safe terminal and updated and it worked a couple times but is now back to the original behavior
