With our new push to KDE 4, this won't get fixed in KDE 3. However, with the new KDE 4 framework, the disk is mounted when you open/access the media, and when you aren't accessing it, it unmounts itself cleanly, allowing you to easily remove the stick w/o having to interact with the machine.
