This problem seems to have reappeared. My most recent update of gutsy is now causing this problem to occur, where it did not before. Using Restricted Repository's nvidia-glx drivers

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed release. You can find out more about the development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/

Regarding my last comment[0], i would like to let you know that:

I recently upgraded my ubuntu installation ( 8.04 ) to 8.10 and the bug has gone, i.e. gnome-screensaver works OK even when compiz/gldesktop is enabled.

On my Notebook (HP/Compaq NC6310) with Intel 945GM-Chipset I have the same problem in Ubuntu 8.10. Only the setting "none" in "Visual Effects" lets all screensavers run without errors.

With activated effects only any simple savers running. The saver GLMatrix or Atlantis then starts with black screen. In the preview-mode they starts for a lot of seconds and blankout after moving the mouse outside the active savername.

If You need more informations, say me, what You need.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release (maybe live CD)? Thanks in advance.

There seem to be a few others with this bug, so before sending it to developers can you include the following files (just to make sure an error isn't occuring somewhere):
~/.xsession-errors
 /var/log/Xorg.0.log

and the output of lspci -vvnn (to determine hardware).

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
