Debian did a libcurl3 -> libcurl4 -> libcurl3 transition.
Ubuntu followed till now only the libcurl3 ->libcurl4 part.

Accepting curl >= 7.16.2-5 would mean that all packages depending on libcurl4{,-openssl,-gnutls} would need to be rebuild again. The libcurl3 -> libcurl4 transition is nearly done in gutsy.

IMHO the current curl packages are a pain as they break several points from Debian's library packaging guide:
 - the package is named libcurl3{,-gnutls} but the library is libcurl.so.4.0.0
 - the libary package are called libcurl3 and libcurl3-gnutls but the matching -dev packages are libcurl4-openssl and libcurl4-gnutls

IMHO it would be saner to keep the current packages from gutsy.

(BTW: current in unstable is curl 7.16.2-6)

No, it wouldn't be saner to keep the current packages in gutsy. There are a *large* number of Reverse Depends on libcurl3 that would need to be transitioned if we stayed put. Going back the other way, as Debian is doing gives us ten or less. I've actually done this merge myself, so Rejecting this bug.
