Workaround as per forums:
find /usr/share/fonts /usr/local/share/fonts /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d -type d -print0 | xargs --null touch

Confirm here, fresh Kubuntu-gutsy alternate 32-bit install. The solution was to touch all the dirs as told at Ubuntuforums. Possible reason was that the date of the folders was too new and touch changed the time backwards. Maybe these directories are created before timezone etc data is set?
