udevd uses 140% CPU

Bug Description

Binary package hint: udev

Since I upgraded to Gutsy, Ubuntu starts two (!) udevd processes, which use something like 140% of my CPU together (I have a dual-core machine).

If I 'sudo killall udevd' and then 'sudo udevd --daemon', CPU usage is normal (0.1%). Perhaps the two udevd instances are locked in some kind of "power struggle"?

Do you have evm package installed? Also check dmesg for quite some error lines about device-manager.
Seems that uninstalling it solves the problem, while a better solution is found.

I do have evms installed.

My console is full of lines like this:
device-mapper: table: 254:0: linear: dm-linear: Device lookup failed
device-mapper: table: 254:0: linear: dm-linear: Device lookup failed
device-mapper: table: 254:0: linear: dm-linear: Device lookup failed

etc.

Ok, then removing evms and rebooting should do for now. -Unless you really need evms.-

What is udevd? I updgraded to Gusty and now it's fighting for 100% of my processor every second of the day...

Udev is the new device managing system for kernel 2.6, replacing hotplug. Takes care of all devices (/dev) and some actions related to them, like whenever you plug a new device. Udevd is a daemon for it.

Okay, removing evms takes care of the 100%+ CPU usage.

I'm not sure I'd call the bug fixed, as some people might need evms, but it's no longer bothering me.

Changed in udev:

I had this issue and removed EVMS to fix it - thanks for posting that. Unfortunately, my software raid 5 array is now operating at 25% of the throughput I achieved on feisty.

Will removing evms adversely affect my ability to access external usb drives?

No. But if it did, you could always reinstall it :)

Sorry isn't an excuse when you do something stupid on purpose.

Before uninstalling evms, I also had two udev processes running and the computer was constantly accessing its drives. There was a rhythm: CD on one, then USB HD on two. 1,2 1,2 1, 2 it was going constantly. While synaptic was still in the process of removing evms, the rhythm stopped. I checked ps aux | grep udev and behold there was only one udev process.

Worked like a charm, and my USB HD is now being recognized again.

Thanks

that happens over and over
I've removed evms and hopefully that will help

I can confirm every comment in this thread. It's annoying, like a few other things in Gusty... I hope it doesn't pile up with other outstanding Feisty bugs that made it into this version.

I have the same problem with two udevd processes, but I'm running 9.10 and evms can no longer take the blame.
