Was about to file same bug.

Proprietary nvidia driver, same crash, same method of trying to enable compiz.

I am marking this bug is a duplicate of bug 123848 as it has a slightly more informative stack trace. Feel free to submit any future bugs you may find.

I also can reproduce the crash. Compiz was working with the nv-driver, but didn't show any effects. Then i enabled the nvidia driver through nvidia-glx and dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. After reboot, compiz crashed.

I seem to be affected by the same crash with nvidia 7400 go, after installing the nvidia-glx-new, and trying to enable compiz in the appearance applet, compiz crashed.
