Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Booting Feisty 7.04 AMD64 Desktop CD on a dual-core system with PATA and SATA drives attached. After starting installation from the desktop, the ext3 formatting of a SATA drive is started but hangs on reaching 5%. Output from

uname -a >uname
cat /proc/cpuinfo >cpu
lspci -v >lspci
grep ^ /proc/ide/*/model >ide

will be attached.

It seems several others have identical problems, but I can't find that they ever reported them: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-465042.html

The motherboard is a Abit KN9 Ultra, to help others searching. I'll attach the contents of /proc/scsi/scsi to show the SATA drives.

We've found the hang at 5% always happens if we set up one SATA drive to be the install destination and ask for a second to be partitioned and formatted at the same time. If we ignored the second drive, since it isn't vital to the installation, the install works fine. Does the formatter attempt to do things in parallel where two separate drives are concerned? If so, perhaps this suggests some issue in the kernel.

Triaged to Confirmed since reporter demonstrates repeatability and work around. It would be helpful to know if this problem still exists with Hardy Alpha since SATA drives are more plentiful and more users will have mixed hardware with both PATA and SATA.

No, hardware currently unavailable due to age.
