DSL connection gone after first reboot - cannot restore

Bug Description

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 7.04.

I ran the terminal window sudo pppoeconf to set up the DSL connection. I opened Firefox and everything was working fine. I had internet connection.
I did a system update.

When I rebooted I could not connect to the internet.

I ran the pppoeconf again but it did not help. I cannot connect. It's showing that there is a wired network connection.

One strange this is when I do a plog or ifconfig it does not show the same information as when I first set up the connection - does not show the CHAP authentication succeeded. It only shows that plugin rp-ppoe.so loaded.

Not sure what to do to re-establish dsl connection.
