startlubuntu missing from 13.10 for x2go

Bug Description

I understand that /usr/bin/startlubuntu was removed from 13.10 (not sure why). However, when using x2go users have been logging in remotely by creating a 'custom' session type which calls /usr/bin/startlubuntu remotely:

Now that this is gone, users have no ability to run a remote lubuntu desktop. One, can run startlxde (or lxsession), but this runs the vanilla lxde session and not the lubuntu one.

I don't use x2go, but have the same problem when trying to start a NX Nomachine connection to a system just upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10. It worked fine before the upgrade...

There is already a workaround available here, it simply copies over the old "startlubuntu" script from 13.04 back in place:

That workaround may solve the problem with x2go, but it doesn't work with NX. I just get a blank desktop...

Here its the same with using ThinLinc. Very annoying and not really clear why "startlubuntu" was removed in 13.10. So please bring it back!

I can confirm the same issue. Not quite unrelated I noticed that running "startxfce4" from xrdp or X2go also doesn't quite work and is missing some things such as themes for one. My guess is that someone decided that if you need remote desktop you should enable it through LightDM and so there is probably some code in there which handles this missing functionality. However, some corporations don't allow opening it up like that. Xrdp is the only officially supported way to connect at my company so we're using the workaround for now.

The work around of installing startlubuntu from 13.04 got me the lubuntu desktop except that the cursor is still an X.

Okay, I got this to work a heck of a lot easier.

So, I read startlubuntu.

blah blah blah blah, oh.

Last line.

# Start the LXDE session
exec /usr/bin/lxsession -s Lubuntu -e LXDE

Well, let's try it.

X2Go: Custom Desktop

lxsession -e LXDE -s Lubuntu

Well, that seems to work!

(using ubuntustudio-installer on top of lubuntu-core)

Either using the command "lxsession -e LXDE -s Lubuntu" or copying the "startlubuntu" script from older version, both works for x2go.

However, neither works when I try to start the desktop from command line. I have a server install with lubuntu-core on top of it and my run level is 3, text mode. When my run level is 5, everthing works fine, when it is 3 these 2 workarounds does not work. Instead running the command "service lightdm start" does work.

The problem is; I need one single solution, a workaround actually, that does work in both cases.

If anyone has an idea, please let me know.

Same issue still exists in 14.10, in my case with xrdp. Actually, it appears that neither startlxde nor startlubuntu exists in 14.10. Putting 'lxsession -e LXDE -s Lubuntu' at the end of /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh (in place of the '. /etc/X11/Xsession' line) does work for xrdp.
