was virtualbox at first properly installed? did you signed the license that comes with this program?

The installation failed, I signed the license by downloading the
innotek.ascfile and installing it by :
apt-key add innotek.asc

strange, did you try the .deb? during the install of virtualbox you have to agree with license. this appears in the terminal. when you dont agree the install fails and often breaks apt and the synaptic.
synaptic and -apt is still working?
please try: sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq virtualbox
and reinstall virtualbox using the .deb.

Yes apt and synaptic were broken I must have skipped something during the
procedure. The command you gave me unistalled the virtual box and brought
back synatpycs to service.

But during the new installation I get :

thx for the additional info. to uninstall virtualbox completely, also remove virtualbox from your homemap: virtualbox.

this is a well known problem with virtualbox and the license that comes with it. this is not a "ubuntu-bug".
if there are further problems I will try to help you installing virtualbox.

I installed some necessary libraries then got rid of an error message by
means of :
*editing /boot/grub/menu.lst* by appending the line ending by :

# kopt=root=UUID=...

with :nmi_watchdog=0

as described in

http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/virtualbox
Then I had still an error message while starting the box, I reinstalled and
it worked.
