Bug Description

I was running VMWare Workstation 6 and booted up the latest Gutsy CD image (2007-07-13). It ran until the GNOME splash screen appears then X automagically restarted. I tried Failsafe GNOME but also didn't help.

Failsafe Terminal worked, and I was able to invoke metacity, gnome-terminal and ubiquity (probably any other GNOME applications) from there. Except for the fact that X crashed when gnome-session is invoked: the last terminal output was 'Checking for texture_from_pixmap support...' .

I have installed Gutsy ok with Failsafe Terminal so I don't feel the need to further investigate the problem. If necessary, though, I will try changing the graphics driver to 'vesa' to see if it worked (it was automatically detected as 'vmware', which 3D support is somewhat fluffy).

Steps to reproduce: Boot up Gutsy in VMWare.

Expected behavior: gnome-session should gracefully fallback if the hardware/driver doesn't support TFP.

The bug also happened after installation, I had to disable "AddARGBGLXVisuals", Composite extension and AIGLX to be able to login normally.

This should be fixed in the newer compiz wrapper, which detects vmware host and refuses to run compiz.
