getdeb doesn't have a complete source package as far as I can tell. (No .dsc package). Probably too late to get this in Gutsy.

The point is, is that we are at upstream version freeze for Gutsy so this wouldn't make it in without an Upstream Version Freeze exception. If someone has a valid reason for it and wants to file one with a proper package, that is fine. Sorry.

According to http://openarena.ws,

0.7.1: 2007-08-08
0.7.0: 2007-07-06
0.6.0: 2006-12-03

Source for 0.7.0: http://openarena.ws/rel/070/ioq3-src-oa.tar.bz2
Patch for 0.7.1 (to be placed in the ~/.openarena/baseoa/ folder): http://files.filefront.com/oa071+patch/;8263156;;/fileinfo.html (unfortunately, not on the http://openarena.ws site)

Reason to be updated: out of date.

How would we submit a proper package? If we compiled 0.7.0, how do be add the patch to the home directory?

Sorry, apparently you're supposed to us http://download.tuxfamily.net/cooker/openarena/rel070/oa070.zip for 0.7.0. I'm not sure why .tar.gz is only 13MB while that .zip I just linked to you is 250MB+.

Tarball is source only? I don't know, I'm just in support of updating the
official rep. That's why I subscribed to the bug, not because I know how to
fix it. (Should I not have subscribed?)

Just a quick hint here:
The packages at http://www.getdeb.net/release.php?id=1147 work like a charm. At least the two client ones, haven't tried the server-package.

But the main reason for this post follows:

I think a Freeze exception really is appropriate in this case. The 0.6 version DOESN'T WORK with 0.7 servers.
Most servers already upgraded and more of them do every day, so the chance to find a server to play get smaller by the day.
After trying to find a server for 10 mins yesterday I upgraded using the packages on getdeb.net.

Keep in mind that this game is all about online play.
The Freeze exception is appropriate because the software is unusable in the current state or will be within weeks.

What about the 0.7.1 patch (forum patch announcement <
http://openarena.ws/board/index.php?topic=985>) that goes in
~/.openarena/baseoa ? It's really only an update to the data, and contains
no modifications to the game engine.

It is not included in the getdeb package that Lutz mentioned, but I did find
OA 0.7.1 at http://www.getdeb.net/release.php?id=1379

Shouldn't that be used instead?

I confirm that an outdated version is quite useless, and will be even less usable at release time. OpenArena is not a "core" component of Ubuntu, no packages depends on it. upgrade do not break compatibility. That's a painless UVF exception. Please upgrade.

Kind regards,
Étienne.

I also think that OpenArena should be updated to 0.7.1. The old version is useless and players will have an wrong impression of the game.

I couldn't connect to a single multiplayer server with the version from apt-get. They all say "invalid game folder" or something like that. Then I downloaded latest from openarena homepage and there was both windows .exe file and linux binary files inside the .zip so I was basically just to "unzip openarena.zip" and then "chmod +x linux_binary" and then "./linux_binary" where "linux_binary can be a bunch of different files depending on which machine architecture etc.. i used "ioquake3.i386" as the binary.

for hardy heron it would be nice if someone set a calendar note "import latest openarena" as late as possible in the cycle when ubuntu still accepts new imports.

Again, this would not make it in Gutsy without a Freeze exception and just saying it's broken is not enough. Someone actually needs to package it up and follow the processes here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreezeExceptionProcess

I, unfortunately do not have time to work on this. For Hardy, maybe but not for Gutsy.

Thanks.

You can get the latest version here:

I just packed up .70 and .71 in a zip file.

Would be nice if it were pre-packaged for 7.10.

Same. What kind of infodumps do we need?
