gui apt tools (synaptic, update-managert, etc) should warn user of apt-cache corruption instead of silently failing

Bug Description

Binary package hint: apt

Ubuntu feisty, fully updated.

Went to synaptic for some package management. Synaptic hung without giving me some hint of error.

So next...fire up the console...

sudo apt-get update ...OK
sudo ap-get upgrade ...Core dump at 50%

After researching this for a while I used the following solution

sudo rm -v /var/cache/apt/*.bin

Now apt does not core dump, which indicates that there was some kind of cache corruption

Problem solved....But the point here is that a user that is using the GUI tools (synaptic, update-manager, update-notifier) will have no clue as to why his system does not update anymore, does not install packages, does not notify him of new updates, etc.

This is a serious usability bug for a distribution that tries to keep it simple.

Please do not mark this as a duplicate, I know there are other bugs related to apt crashes in launchpad, but they are more focused on command line solutions than on GUI notification of the problem.

It's too bad you didn't save the corrupted file, as that would have been necessary to reproduce your failing. Do you have any core dumps or backtraces or anything?
