Mythtv "Error encountered displaying video" on DVB-T program change

Bug Description

Binary package hint: libmyth-0.20

There is a defect in mythtv whereby, on DVB-T streams the front-end will get an error at the switch-over between programs.

The symptom is that the system displays "Error was encountered while displaying video" and the user must return to the main menu.

The cause is something to do with a race condition where mythtv has not opened (for writing) the file for the next program before it tries reading from it.

This has been fixed on the HEAD mythtv stream in patch 1153, but the patch has not been ported to the mythtv-0.20-fixes stream (and so has not been incorporated in the Ubuntu packages).

Please consider applying this patch - it applies cleanly to the deb sources and stops the problem occurring.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for this report. I'll be glad to apply this to the Ubuntu packages.
Please report back if it ends up being included in 0.20-fixes as well.

Thanks!

Mario

I've requested this to be included in 0.20-fixes. We include this patch in myPVR to fix this particular problem.

I've been seeing this issue with 0.21+fixes on Intrepid, using DVB-S (WinTV HVR-4000).

I discovered that deleting the zero-length files on the backend in /var/lib/mythtv/recordings/ would usually solve this issue.

Sometimes though, if the front-end has saved the last channel, and that channel has a tuning lock but no signal, it will cause the problem to recur as soon as "Watch TV" is initiated. The workaround is to alter the starting channel to one known to have a valid signal *before* using "Watch TV".
