Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

Ubuntu Feisty installs fine off cd.

But CD/DVD driver is not loaded after install.
dmesg has no reference to the CD/DVD and /dev/hdb is not created

/dev/hdb is found in /etc/fstab but driver is not loaded.

modprobe piix

fixes problem

adding piix to /etc/modules is a long term fix.

Laptop is Asus S96S with ICH8M ide controller

I can confirm, that Feisty kernel (from 7.04 repositories and from updates - 2.6.20-16) doesn't detect CD/DVD drives on lots of laptops, built on santarosa platform. Examples of such laptops are Sony Vaio AR41L , Vaio FZ11E and others (ASUS, Toshiba, etc). Because of this I can't start Feisty LiveCD on computers, built on santarosa platform.
Ubuntu Dapper and Gutsy Tribe 5 kernels (from 08-23 LiveCD) start fine on such computers.
Btw, isn't this bug related to bug #126653 ?

I can confirm this too.
On Ubuntu 7.04. Quite bad that the CDROM isn't useable after installation.

Laptop: Dell Latitude D630.
Any other information needed? Or has this been fixed already?
Think the importance should be set high, as it's a very important feature: CDROM.
