Dragging remote volumes to Trash should unmount them

there is a patch on the upstream bug. could ubuntu include this patch even if upstream does not?

its a completely unobtrusive feature, and i imagine it does not use up much in the way of system resources.

Sam, if you read the upstream bug you will note that the feature is controversal and the maintainer to use the trash for something else than deleting because than can be confusing and make you destroy some datas if you get confused by either it'll eject or drop the content of your device

i have read the discussion. i agreed with the point that if a program knows what the user wants to do then it should do it. people who have used macs are likely to try this two eject disk. its also useful for people with single button mice (an accessibility thing?)

I think that's a decision which should be taken upstream. It's really confusing to have the same desktop (ie: GNOME) behaving differently on 2 different computers you may have to use because some distro made a choice different from upstream like that

This is actually explicitly against the Gnome HIG. From http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/principles-match.html.en :

"When using metaphors, however, it is important to neither take the metaphor too literally, nor to extend the metaphor beyond its reasonable use. For example, the capacity of a file folder should not be limited to the capacity of a physical file folder, which presumably could contain only a few documents before becoming unwieldy. On the other hand, a waste basket should not be used for anything other than holding discarded files. It should not be used, for example, to eject a removable disk such as a floppy or CD."

Also nautilus now has eject buttons on volumes starting in Intrepid so I think this is arguably both deprecated and undesirable.
