Bug Description

Binary package hint: democracyplayer

Democracy player exits and closes the window while trying to update the channel guide home page.

Steps:
   (1) Installed the new Miro (formerly Democracy) from the repository suggested by getmiro.com ( formerly getdemocracy.com) to install version 0.9.8.
   (2) Found that the program exits without notice when it tries to update and display the channel guide home page.
   (3) Removed it after found it crashes and restored the system to its previous state. That is, revoked the updates in the sources.list file and completely removed the installed dependencies using Synaptic.
   (4) Used "Add/Remove" interface to install Democracy 0.9.2.1 from Ubuntu repositories.
   (5) The same problem occurs and the program exits without notice when it tries to update and display the channel guide home page.

Platform:
Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty), Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz, ATI Radeon 9200SE 128 MB

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make Ubuntu better. However, it seems that you are not using a software package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories. Because of this the Ubuntu project can not support or fix your particular bug. Please report this bug to the provider of the software package. Thanks!

Sorry, I read your bug too fast the first time, and missed steps (4) and (5)!

One possible reason for this to occur is that you have config files generated by the 0.9.8 version which aren't properly readable by the older 0.9.2.1. Can you move the existing config (~/.democracy) out of the way (to ~/.democracy-backup, for example), and see if that fixes it?

Thanks Chris for your reply! I had already deleted the config directory using rm -fr, but forgot to report that at the first time. Even after I had removed the directory and relaunched the application, it exits only at the "Channel guide".

I have tried one more action: it would not need more than 2 seconds display the "Channel Guide". So, If I quickly click "My Collection", for example, everything goes normal. Nothing goes wrong at any "New Videos" or "Downloading". Only the "Channel Guide" view causes that problem.

I have also uninstalled the application and its dependencies completely using Synaptic, and reinstalled it from "Add/Remove". It created a new config directory and exited the same while trying to display the "Channel Guide.

Here is one more attachment that declares the error. I have tried to run the program from a terminal command line and an error occurred that caused to terminate. Below is the error message.

I experienced the same error and fixed it temporaly according to
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=506600
by uncomment the line that says self.add_renderer("gstrenderer")
And then comment out the line that says self.add_renderer("xinerenderer")

Thanks for your help. It seems to be a good workaround.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 beta or later?
