Bug Description

Hi,
I recenetly reinstalled Ubuntu 7.04.
At first, sound worked fine.
After I installed all the updates (through the update manger), sound stopped completely, even though the sound card is recognized OK.

The reason I reinstalled it was because the sound went dead the first time, and after I tried several suggestions (the last one included reinstalling the alsa package), I also lost GUI (and since I am quite a NB, I did not know what to do except for reinstalling UBUNTU)

I want to emphasize that out of the box, sound is working perfectly OK. Only after I install the updates, the sound is disabled. I believe it is a result of one of the latest kernel updates.

I tried all the suggestions showed in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 and also tried to re-install the alsa package.

I am a NB in linux (so please, be very clear with your suggestions).
Thanks,

Hagai

Too bad your efforts didn't work out yet. To be able to analyse the problem, we need some more information. Please look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems , especially the section "Reporting Sound Bugs".

Also, make sure that you really tried all controls in alsamixer - not only unmuting everything, but also muting for example the capture monitor, if you have any (see comment from Miklosi Attila on http://alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=Intel&card=ICH+southbridge+AC97+audio.&chip=440MX%2C+i810%2C+i810E%2C+i820%2C+ICH4%2C+ICH5%2C+ICH6&module=intel8x0 ).

OK.
I think I managed to solve it though I have no idea why this works.
I reinstalled UBUNTU. This time, when I installed all the updates, I de-selected all the kernel updates (everything which starts with "linux...".
There were 5 of these.
After that I installed all the remaining 5 updates.
Sound is working.
Hope it helps someone.

Thanks for the information, although I don't see anything wrong at first glance. I'm glad to read that you've got it working again, although it required a full reinstall. In the future, please do attach the information as separate files, that keeps the bug tracking system consistently organised.

At first I created all the required seperated files. But when I tried to
attach them, I saw that I can attach only a single file (come to think of
it, I could have used a TAR file).
Anyway, thank you.

Best regards,
Hagai
