Bug Description

I have a toshiba portege M400 which has an integrated GPRS/3G card with an onboard SIM. This has been activated and works under Windows XP, but it doesn't seem to be detected under Ubuntu Gutsy running 2.6.22.

Whilst Dell laptops are not the same I was going by this guide:- http://www.net42.co.uk/os/linux/d620_3g_datacard.html which suggests that I should see some device under /proc/bus/usb/ which I don't - it's empty.

Attachments to follow.

I've got a new Dell Latitude D830, also with a built in Novatel Wireless HSDPA Modem.

Gutsy did not pick up the hardware....

I had to fix it by supplying the usbserial module with some info:

modprobe usbserial vendor=0x413c product=0x8137

There after it created /dev/ttyUSB[01], and the modem works fine.

The Novatel 3G/GPRS card for XPS M1330 with vendor/product 413c:8138 remains undetected in Hardy.

sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x413c product=0x8137

Initiates the modem as aspected.

Typo, of course I meant to write:

sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x413c product=0x8138

As a workaround, the following instructions makes the internal 3g modem loaded upon boot and available after suspends, hibernations etc:

1. Add "usbserial" to /etc/modules
2. Add "options usbserial vendor=0x413c product=0x8138" to /etc/modprobe.d/options

You need to potentially adjust the product option according to the number you have listed in the output of "lsusb".

Umtsmon (http://umtsmon.sourceforge.net) can then successfully use the modem to easily establish an internet connection.

Note: There was no need to "activate" the modem in Windows.

Hi Motin,

Care to confirm this is still an issue with the latest Alpha for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10. You should be able to test via a LiveCD - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. We'll keep this bug open against the actively developed kernel bug against 2.6.22 this will be closed as it does not qualify for a Stable Release Update - http://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseupdates . Thanks.

The lack of /proc/bus/usb is a red herring. I have that mounted and the device still doesn't work.

Follow-up: usbserial works but will NOT cope with HSDPA data speeds, meaning it is not a viable solution for this HSDPA 3G modem.

The solution is to use the option driver, which actually supports the 413c:8138 card out-of-the-box in Hardy.

So, adding a line with "option" to /etc/modules and then rebooting solves this issue.

Now, can we have option loaded by default on boot in Intrepid? That would solve this bug...

Motin, you might want to file a separate bug. This one was originally filed for the device in my toshiba laptop which is _not_ fixed.

Thanks Alan,

Care to quickly attach an updated dmesg output when running Intrepid. Also care to comment which Intrepid kernel you are running 'cat /proc/version_signature' . Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

What's the status of this bug?

I've followed up on the instructions for usbserial module loading.
Except I can't get the card to work with nm or wvdial.

My product id differs though: 0302

In /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/10-modem.fdi I added:
<!-- Toshiba Corp. Wireless Broadband -->
      <match <email address hidden>:usb.vendor_id" int="0x0930">
       <!-- (3G HSDPA) SM-Bus Minicard Status Port -->
 <match key ="@info.parent:usb.product_id" int="0x1302">
  <match <email address hidden>:usb.interface.number" int="0">
     <append key="modem.command_sets" type="strlist">GSM-07.07</append>
            <append key="modem.command_sets" type="strlist">GSM-07.05</append>
         </match>
        </match>
      </match>
Where the modem show up in nm when usbserial module is loaded with the correct options but doesn't work.

Because of toshiba_acpi missing in current kernel I'm using 2.6.27-10.20 from proposed.

Have a look at the Novatel developers forum.
Serial.h
New version toshset can switch modem in high-power mode.
Serial.h needs adjusting to recognize the rebranded Novatel modem.
Do some googling.

In the mean time, network manager is getting bluetooth 3G-phone-modem
support according to Dan Williams blog. Which is great!
Place phone against window for a nice 3G packet connection. Transported
over bluetooth to your laptop somewhere behind a thick concrete wall.
Much better than a "internal" modem.

Serail.h needs to be fixed upstream.

Cheers.
