Bug Description
Binary package hint: totem
When playing some videos, I can only hear audio, the screen only displays moving colored strips from left bottom to up right.
I'm using ubuntu 7.04 and cannot read examples/Experience ubuntu.ogg.
I'm quite sure I used to be able to play this one.
But in the mid time I had to download some codec to be able to play some mpg video.
I think may be because of that, I have this problem, but don't know how to uninstall codec to test this.

I'm sorry, I never heard about compiz. But if I check with synaptic manager, it happens that the following paquets installed:
compiz, compiz-core, compiz-gnome, compiz-gtk, compiz-plugins.
should I try to uninstall these paquets ?
Also I have some new information about this bug. I have installed gxine wich can read the ogg video but not my mpg1 videos.
But then, I can read anything I want with totem.
This is how it happens: I first open gxine, but not use it. Then I open totem and can read anything.
As soon as I close gxine, totem is not able to play my next mpg1 video or even the ogg one.
And then, I have to reboot ubuntu to make it work again.
For avoiding to reboot ubuntu, I should close totem before closing gxine.

Compiz is activated when you use the desktop effects option. Can you try reading the video using gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:
didieric (didieric) wrote : | #5 |
- v-costumes_poissons.mpg Edit (1.6 MiB, video/mpeg)
I've tried out the command line. Same behavior. It only works if gxine is running. Many things are printed on the command line but no error or warning message.
It happens to all the mpg1 videos I produced myself using adobe premiere. here is a sample video.
Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote : | #6 |
The video is played correctly on gutsy. Could you attach the log of the gst-launch command?
didieric (didieric) wrote : | #7 |

I run the command with -v option and the result is in the attached file. Tell me if this not what you want cause I'm not sure.

Is this same/similar as bug #134370
I am getting this problem on gutsy latest though. I never had problem till tribe 1. It started somewhere around tribe 4.

Do you get the issue with the gst launch command? What videocard and driver do you use?
didieric (didieric) wrote : | #10 |

I'm sorry I can't figure out what to do to get information about my videocard and the driver I use.
I tried the following command:
gst-launch filesrc location=
and I only get the attached error message.
Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote : | #11 |
The xorg configuration file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf, can you attach it to the bug? Could you try to use playbin with gst-launch as described before?

didieric (didieric) wrote : | #14 |
I 've set the property as you said, but still same behavior when playing the video in totem or using the gst-launch playbin command.
I noticed a strange behavior though, when totem is running, gst-launch works fine.
Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote : | #15 |
reassigning to gstreamer for now, could be a video driver issue, weird that the x11 videosink doesn't work though

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 9.04? Thanks in advance.
