Looking through ubuntu's 2.6.22 source tree, I notice that the ubuntu sub directory containing the rtl wireless drives and other important drives is missing.

Side note: It doesn't seem like bug reports are the way to communicate with developers. Should I be doing this through a developer channel? I just want to help out from time to time. I don't have the time to be an active developer responsible for packages.

Are developers reading these bug reports, or is there a layer of bug report readers who follow both the bug reports and kernel development? I feel quite useless here. hmmm!!!

At this time 2.6.22.9 the rtl wireless drivers are missing.
Here is a way to hack it in. Warning not tested.

I look forward to rtl wireless drivers returning to the mainline in 2.6.23.

But if you are like me a gutsy user of the rtl wireless drivers such as rtl818x and others, you won't be able to wait.
Alternative and easier solution for most is installing festy and pinning the kernel to 2.6.20 and upgrade to gusty.

Also perhaps Ben Collins has better solution.

The new "rtl8187" driver included and enabled by default in the Gutsy kernel 2.6.22.9 works for me. From what I can understand it is a replacement for the older r818x driver, right?

rtl8187 and rtl818x are different drivers.
I will try the rtl8187 driver in place of the rtl818x driver to see if
that works.

nope, the rtl8187 driver will not work on a rtl8180 device.
The rtl8187 driver is not a replacement of the rtl818x driver, as you will see from http://rtl-wifi.sourceforge.net/wiki

Need the rtl818x driver, which was in 2.6.20, but missing from 2.6.22

It also gives me the hard freeze in the live cd session, in Feisty I dealt with it by blacklisting the driver and using ndiswrapper.
But no solution yet?

@stefc: you nominated this ticket for hardy and intrepid. I think the kernels available for those releases have the fix, no?

It now works well in Ubuntu 9.10!
