OpenOffice.org programs fail to start - stuck at splash screen and using 100% CPU

Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When starting an open office program (I tried oowriter, oocalc, ooimpres and ooffice), the program never starts successfully - instead it gets stuck at the splash screen stage.

The splash screen appears and the blue progress bar reaches 100% and then OpenOffice.org just stays that way and never completes the load, while consuming 100% CPU - in the gnome-system-monitor I can see that soffice.bin is taking up all the CPU. At this point the computer is very sluggish and even the cursor moving slowly.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 alpha 1 updated using apt-get dist-upgrade daily. I've installed it instead of Fedora Core 7 - I formatted all the partitions except /home, and I've tested the same behavior with old users from the previous installation as well as with users created after the Ubuntu install.

I'm using the nvidia driver from the restricted driver manager with desktop effects enabled (if it makes any difference).

Currently, OpenOffice.org is unusable and its a serious problem for me.

I tried the same with compiz disabled (Desktop effects set to "no effects" in the "appearance preferences"), and it behaves the same.

I can confirm that. Typing oowriter in the terminal will lead to the following lines:

I use KDE. Gnome was not involved in this bug.

I'm using KDE too, but without openoffice-gnome it doesn't work. So why shouldn't I use the package of Gnome for some days or weeks.
