Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Drive is a HP CD-Writer Plus 8290 (CD-R/RW)

I have been having problems burning media on my drive.

I insert media, media goes in and is mounted. I try to burn an iso but the burning program (I have used Nautilus CD/DVD Writer, Brasero and GnomeBaker) doesn't recognize that the media is inserted and the disk is eventually ejected.

If I try and view 'Properties' on the desktop's CDROM mount icon it pooches Nautilus. All my desktop icons vanish and it gets sluggish.

Little help?

EDIT

The Feisty LiveCD works fine enough to install the OS. The problem seems to be with blank media.

Thanks for your comments. This does not appear to be a bug report as such It might be a problem with your CD-Writer. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise your question in the support tracker. http://launchpad.net/support

I have the same type of cd burner and I have the same problem. A blank cd appears as "CD-ROM Disk". This is a problem with Ubuntu, not the drive. I will be glad to help.

A similar problem happens with other disks. For example: my StarCraft CDs and any music CD.

Ubuntu tries to eject music CDs at various instances no matter which program I use.

I need the Starcraft CDs in the drive in order to play the game but Ubuntu keeps trying to eject them. At least this time I just get a pop-up saying something like "Cannot eject. Disk is in Use" that steals focus if I don't have the game window set to 'Always On Top'.

Also, while Gnome-based programs eject blank media, KDE programs like K3B burn media perfectly. I haven't tested KDE's music players but I believe this is a Gnome issue, not a kernel one.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Fixed as of Hardy Heron. Works in Intrepid also.
