Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

while on the gdm login screen hit ctrl-alt-delete

The screen flickers a few times then a dialog comes up saying to the effect
that the starter has crash will try another

on clicking ok the screen flickers and the dialog comes back again, and again and again.... :)

Workround:

flip to 1st console <alt>-f1 then run /etc/init.d/gdm stop
(which doesnt actually stop it but it does come back to life!)

*** ctrl-alt-delete SHOULD READ ctrl-alt-backspace ****

Is it a bug that posters cant edit (with audit trail) their own posts....

Thank you for your bug. What version of the gdm package do you use? Does it happen every time? Can you enable the debug in gdmsetup and copy the /var/log/syslog text to a comment when you run into the bug?

as mentioned in the title I'm using gutsy, I update daily so whatever
version comes with gutsy

hitting ctrl-alt-backspace while in gmd always causes the problem

did you try to replicate this yourself?

Just double checked, behaviour has changed since last update

after hitting ctrl-alt-backspace wait for it to restart and hit ctrl-alt-backspace
again

the work round has changed slightly after running

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

switch to another console kill (-9) gdm as stop will probably
hang (often does)

it will either restart properly or you'll be able to restart with
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

if compiz brings xorg down you will only need to do one ctrl-alt-backspace

Hi there
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the development version of Ubuntu, Hardy Heron?

Thanks in advance.
