I had the same problem. This was fixed by installing gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg as part of a fix for Ubuntu 14.04 to provide full support for the H.264 codec. Installing gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg provides all of the necessary dependencies that are missing from arista transcoder in 14.04.

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg -y

Which repositories do you have? In a clean 14.04 installation, the above command says there is no candidate for installation...
related to http://askubuntu.com/questions/432542/is-ffmpeg-missing-from-the-official-repositories-in-14-04 I guess.

Well, further reading the question, I found
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mc3man/trusty-media
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

and that made arista working again (well, restarting arista was needed).

Same bug with Ubuntu 16.04, the ppa doesn't help. Arista unusable (and no more in the repositories)
