Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

This is a regression from 7.04 on a Sony Vaio VGN-CR120E laptop. I'm running Gutsy Tribe 4 from the gutsy-desktop-amd64.iso image dated 8/9/2007.

This repros on both a Live Session boot and on the installed bits (with the 117 initial updates applied). This could be related to bug 131577 but that was for a previous version, at least some of attachments are different, and it didn't have the workaround below.

walter@waltwld5:~$ aplay --list-devices
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC262 Analog [ALC262 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Steps to repro (Gutsy Tribe 4):
1) Boot into the desktop and open System->Preferences->Sound and click one of the Test buttons next to an Autodetect Sound Playback control.

Expected: Hear the tone.

Observed: No sound from the internal laptop speakers.

Workaround: If I plug in a set of headphones I can hear the tone, and after the headphones are unplugged the sound can be heard through the internal speakers as expected. This plugging / unplugging of headphones was not necessary on 7.04.

Attached (per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems):
sndstat
amixer // note: after plugging / unplugging headphones
// there was no etc/asound.conf
dmesg

When I plug in the head phones, I can hear sound, but unplugging them does NOT enable the laptop's internal speakers:

I've upgraded to 8.04 Alpha and the problem disappeared (but I guess there was a lot of audio work for Heron so don't know if it is the same driver or not).
