Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic

My D-link DWL-G120 card under ndiswrapper works correctly under 2.6.20-15, but fails to connect via nm-applet under 2.6.20-16. The device exists, but in syslog I receive: nm_device_802_11_wireless_set_essid (): error setting ESSID to '' for device wlan0: Invalid argument

What's interesting is that it also fails under 2.6.20-15 if, and only if, 2.6.20-16 is installed. Ie, if I boot up in 15, with 16 on disk, nm-applet also fails. It appears that the wrong modules for ndiswrapper is being loaded??

Oh I forgot to add. This is under feisty with the standard repositories on a new installation. All packages are updated to 8/13/07, obviously exception the kernel which I had to downgrade to 15.

And finally, it's not a device recognition issue. The device is recognized, I get a reasonable ifconfig wlan0, and ap scanning appears to work correctly - all local ap's are shown under nm-applet.

Further investigation reveals that this is an ndiswrapper bug, or a bug in the way ndiswrapper gets loaded. It's intermittent under 15 - I just got "lucky" a few times with that kernel. But if I modprobe -r ndiswrapper and then modprobe ndiswrapper, everything works again. I would try to debug with wpa_supplicant, if I happened to have any idea on how to configure that...

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
