Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

After installing XGL and running GNOME with Compiz Fusion, all applications start at the top left of the screen with titlebars hidden underneath top panel (that contains Applications, Place, System, etc...) and must manually be moved by right clicking the application in the task bar and clicking Move, or Alt +clicking the window to move it. I have since removed the panel at the top and moved it to bottom of the screen as a workaround.

You've somehow managed to remove the 'place' plugin from your active plugin list. Reenable it in ccsm.

Changed in compiz:
status: New → Invalid

I have the titlebars visible.
I have Place plugin enabled.

But I have also experienced that many applications open at the top-left corner...
