Bug Description

Both System->Quit->Shut down and "shutdown -h now" from the console fail to cut power to the CPU and hard disks. The final message on the screen (before it goes blank) is "Will now halt". Only the Microsoft Multimedia keyboard and Microsoft wheel mouse are shut off (i.e. indicator lights disappear), while the CPU, hard disk and monitor keep running.

"shutdown -h now" works perfectly in Recovery Mode.

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 530 @ 3.0 GHz
Motherboard: Asus P5GDC-V Deluxe
Hard Disk: Western Digital Caviar SATA1 - 80 GB
Video: Intel integrated 915G

uname -a : Linux sol 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 20:19:32 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
version_signature : Ubuntu 2.6.20-16.29-generic

I have read other bug reports outlining very similar symptoms and tried the proposed fixes. Adding "acpi=force" to the kernel boot line did not help, nor did getting into single-user mode via "init 1" and then shutting down with "shutdown -h now". I have even tried "shutdown -hP now", "halt" and "poweroff".

For what it's worth, my previous Arch Linux installation with kernel 2.6.22 suffered from almost identical symptoms, but only after I installed the alsa-utils package. Starting from a minimal base installation and avoiding installation of alsa-utils was very helpful (of course, there was then no way of unmuting mixer channels so this "fix" is practically useless).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Thanks for picking this up. I have found a temporary fix for 7.04.

Manually unloading all sound-related modules (snd-hda-intel, snd-hda-codec, soundcore, etc.) with "modprobe -r" prior to issuing "shutdown -h 0" seems to fix the problem.

Nonetheless, I will try to find a more elegant solution with the 7.10 LiveCD.
