Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

When I save a message for later work (as a draft), that message is not there when I return.

If I save a draft, and then go look in the draft folder right away, I see the message in there. However, if I close out of thunderbird and then come back to it, the message is no longer in the draft folder.

This is an IMAP account. Other changes I make (such as moving messages) also appear not to take place, so this may be a more general problem than just the draft folder. For example, if I delete a message from the inbox, that message may reappear there the next time I run thunderbird.

I was tempted to create a new bug report, as this one does not exactly match the behavior I've observed with Thunderbird (which does save drafts -- just not all the time). Nor is 190877 the same (the reporter for that issue was trying to override default draft-saving behavior for multiple accounts, and I'm not trying to do that). Nevertheless, those two issues are close enough that I strongly suspect an attempt to create a new bug report would be marked as a duplicate of one of these, so I'll start off by adding my observations, and if encouraged to do so, will create a separate issue.

Generally, saving a draft in Thunderbird does work for me, but occasionally TB will lose a draft, usually (always?) right after bringing up the draft, editing it, saving it, and closing the window for the draft. Happened again this morning. I had a message which had been sitting in the Drafts folder for at least a couple of weeks. I brought it up with a double-click, added a subject line, and then selected Save from the File menu. At this point I was asked for the password for another IMAP account than the one in whose Drafts folder this message lived. I assumed that it was just a coincidence that TB had decided to check for new messages for that account, but given what happened subsequently, I'm not so sure that assumption was correct. Since I didn't want the draft to be moved to the Drafts folder for the other account, in case my assumption wasn't right (why would TB want to do that?) I clicked Cancel to the password request. Then I closed the window for the draft message which I thought I had just saved. But then I noticed that the message was no longer in the drafts folder. Fortunately I take nightly backups of all my systems, but TB should not just throw away a message. I used to write email gateway software, and at the very top of the "no-no" list is throwing away a piece of mail silently. I would regard this is as a critical bug.

Bob its always a good thing to start a new bug if you have any doubts about yours being the same, this one looks the same bug. For now lets leave this here Bob.

Is this reproducible using POP3? I am unable to reproduce this on my pop3 set up. Maybe ill change one of my accounts to IMAP and see if i can reproduce this bug but that wont happen until sometime this week, Since i never used IMAP it might take a while to play with it so i have better under standing.

Baruch is this an issue with Thunderbird-2.0 for you you can get it if you upgrade to 8.04 ir upgrade your system from 7.0 > 7.10 than you have to upgrade from 7.10 > 8.04, we are unable to support an upgrade that is more than one release at a time as it will break things and apt nor update-manager have issues when upgrading by skipping releases.

John: I'm not even able to reproduce it at will using IMAP. This is one of those random bugs which decides on its own when it's going to happen.

OK thanks for the info, let me know if you reproduce this bug and let me
know the exact steps you took. I am looking at setting up an IMAP for
one of my addresses since i cant find a free email account that uses
IMAP by default and in Thunderbird.

Now back to the beginning I have been reading htis bug alot lately and
im getting the idea that you are saving it in Drafts folder in
Thunderbird. If this is true please dont as drafts get cleaned out on
shutdown as i recall. I will test this out on POP and IMAP once i figure
out changing a POP3 account to an unsupported IMAP

Please let me know if this bug is still around and the steps you took to
reproduce this (i would like 2-3 examples) This will give me an idea on
what is going on.

Just out of curiosity, how did this bug, which was filed over a half-dozen years ago, get marked as a duplicate of a bug filed last year?
