Bug Description

Binary package hint: udev

These 3 packages seem to be related to each other in a way that won;t allow them to upgrade...

$ sudo apt-get install dmsetup
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
dmsetup: Breaks: udev (< 113-0ubuntu1) but 103-0ubuntu13 is to be installed
udev: Depends: volumeid (= 103-0ubuntu13) but 113-0ubuntu6 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

Downloading and installing the packages by hand fixes the problem.

libdevmapper1.02_1.02.08-1ubuntu10_amd64.deb udev_113-0ubuntu6_amd64.deb
volumeid_113-0ubuntu6_amd64.deb

then apt-get -y dist-upgrade will upgrade dmsetup

apt-get simply didn't download the additional packages, so was correctly safe-guarding you from having a broken system. If you'd used aptitude or the update-manager, you would have been fine.

status: New → Invalid

In that case then this is a bug in apt, I think. I have just had a similar problem with rss-glx and enblend not updating using adept. When I tried to update them using apt-get I discovered that they needed a particular library, which I was then able to install easily, also using apt-get. Users should expect this kind of thing to be corrected automatically.

I should add that even if adept would work and apt-get would not, this
would be problematic because there are problems with adept-updater.
See Bug 144722.

This is fine now in Jaunty, as I believe it is now installed by default. Closing bug report.
