I tried Fedora, Suse and Ubuntu (edgy, feisty and gutsy) with the same result: modem acts as soundcard.
windows handles this by simply installing soundmax driver for ac97. ..
I can live without modem just fine, but when you have no sound you are not having fun, right?
What version of ubuntu are you running ?
