Bug Description

Binary package hint: scim

After following the instructions for adding Japanese Language input to an English version of Ubuntu, I found that launching Synaptic Package Manager causes a second SCIM icon to appear beside the initial SCIM icon.

The instructions can be found at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Japanese_Input_and_Fonts_in_Ubuntu_7.04

Please note: I did not follow the downloading external fonts instructions as I did not think the base fonts were that ugly.

Known problem. The second tray icon is for the GTK applications started as root.

Note this only happens with GTK_IM_MODULE=scim, which is (probably) the default for feisty (7.04). So far gutsy is not using this as default.

It happens also with these assignments:

QT_IM_MODULE=scim
GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge

I'm running Gutsy. I'm not claiming that this is the Gutsy default but that the problem happens not *only* with GTK_IM_MODULE=scim.

Yes, GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge will likely trigger the same problem. GTK_IM_MODULE=xim (which should be the gutsy default) won't.

I'm on Jaunty now but unable to reproduce this bug. My environment variables are:

QT_IM_MODULE=xim
GTK_IM_MODULE=scim-bridge

I use Gnome as my desktop.

Thank you for reporting. I think this may be fixed in 1.4.9 which is about to be released in Karmic. Please verify.

Ronald and Louis-Dominique, can you please report if you still experience this problem in Karmic? Use a USB stick or a live CD to boot if your main system is not Karmic.

I will assume this was fixed in gutsy as per Ming-Hua's comment
