Bug Description

Binary package hint: k3b

After recording data into a DVD media the DVD recorder hangs. K3b reports all is OK and the recorded DVD seems to be OK too.

The recorder won't work anymore until I restart the computer. If I press the eject button... nothing happens. This is the output from an eject command:

$ LANGUAGE=en eject /dev/scd0 -v
eject: device name is `/dev/scd0'
eject: expanded name is `/dev/scd0'
eject: `/dev/scd0' is not mounted
eject: `/dev/scd0' is not a mount point
eject: `/dev/scd0' is not a multipartition device
eject: trying to eject `/dev/scd0' using CD-ROM eject command
eject: CD-ROM eject command failed
eject: trying to eject `/dev/scd0' using SCSI commands
eject: SCSI eject succeeded

Eject says: 'succeeded', but the DVD recorder is still hanged, and don't react to this. Additionally, here's the output from dmesg. When I put the disc inside the recorder:

[102448.373887] UDF-fs: No VRS found
[106270.998109] sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive.
[107030.110307] cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!

And when the recording finishes:

Recording works OK with brasero, and worked ok with k3b on versions previous to 1.0. I wonder what's happening here :|!

Today I've been able to record three DVD without any problem, with the same OS/disk but on another computer. Same model of DVD Recorder: BENQ DVD DD DW1625.

I'll change the ATA wires in the computer that is failing. What motherboard do you have, Oleg and Mario? I'll report this next week, when I can reach that computer.

That's my suggestion on this situation: problem is DVD-driver. Motherboard is Intel (i845G). Let's try that - http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=145145

So, for me it's working again.

This bug is not related to k3b.

I have the same symptoms and syslog error messages as described above with
wodim (cdrecord successor) on ubuntu 8.0.4.1 :

I can burn 1 to 4 DVDs but then the drive is not accesible any more and I
have to reboot. Burning CDs works ok so far.

It is really annoying, some kind of windows feeling: if it does not work,
reboot. GRMPF.

I have an HP Pavillion a420n with a BENQ DVD DD DW1625 and I am using avi2dvd, imageburn, and I am having the same exact problem. After a few DVD burns, the image burner locks and I have to reboot the PC. Any suggestions? (Windows XP)

temkhabana: We do not support Windows XP, Canonical neither make, nor support it, sorry.

Can someone confirm if this problem occurs in Jaunty, as I am unable to test this - no access to Kubuntu. From there, if this has been fixed, the fix **may** be able to be backported according to SRU.
Thank you.

The k3b debug messages are unrelated to the main error message
and by judging from the k3b debug messages, growisofs was used.

I recommend to run a manual test with cdrecord

ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/

make sure to not confuse cdrecord with the broken wodim
while doing this test....
