Unable to burn dvd-r

Btw, burning to dvd+rw works fine. Also cd-r worked fine, I have not tried any other formats.

Have you had any luck with this issue? I seem to have the same problem. Only have tried DVD-R, but does not work, in the same manner. I'm running 6.06 LTS (server), with no X, just commandline utils (growisofs), but I get the same error. It recognizes the blank disc, but refuses to write it.

I have the same problem with DVD-R -R/ -RW /-R DL

since I updated to the last kernel 2.6.20-18-generic and since then, I Can only burn DVD-R, +R don't burn.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 beta or later?

I am currently using the 8.10 latest release and I have this problem also. My machine is a Dell Inspiron 6000. My drive is an NEC DVD+-RW, model # ND-6500A. I tried to burn a Maxcell DVD-R (which have never given me any problems in the past) using Brasero, K3b, and the built-in burning functions of Ubuntu.

I can confirm the problem on my Inspiron 6000 using Sony DVD-R

I have just discovered that the same dvd-r do not work on windows either. Therefore, in my case the problem is probably in the firmware of the NEC DVD+-RW drive.

I resolved my issue with a firmware upgrade. The 203E firmware upgrade, available at Dell.com allowed me to burn more DVD-R types (different media IDs). I originally had 203C firmware. I understand that NEC also issued firmware for 6500A drives other than the OEMs.

Same problem here - started with Ubuntu 8.10 (Server) and seems to be present in 10.04.

- SATA DVD drive
- DVD-RW media
- growisofs fails:
