I can confirm this in Tribe 4 live-CD with a nVidia GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x graphics card and a Philips 107E monitor, if this helps. Also, the logo neither appears during the shut down process. Instead, the screen image gets deformed.

However, the Ubuntu usplash logo appears if I boot in the default VGA mode.

Yes, same for me - during shutdown process screen image either gets deformed or disappears completely.

I am having this black screen problem from Edgy days...i couldnt boot from LiveCD/LiveUSB but i am able to upgrade without any issues.
I am using Dell Inspiron 5160 with XGI Trident Volari XP5 video card. Surprised that we still keep getting this issue with each new version!

To add, this black screen is not allowing to to do anything...ctrl+alt+F1 is not working nor is ctrl+alt+backspace.
Adding to boot options things like "noacpi" or "nosplash" or "noapic nolapic" etc is not working.
safe graphics mode doesnt work either.
No way to get to terminal, so cant reconfigure xserver-xorg.
And this is not just related to ATI.
This is one such issue to help fix BUG#1.

Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. The initial description of the bug speaks about a completely black screen when booting the LiveCD with 1024x768x32 VGA mode, which I suspect to be normal with some hardware. Is there somebody who can reproduce this bug using the default VGA mode?

Since there is no usplash modes available in latest Hardy release and that usplash now always use the "safe-mode" resolution, I set the status to Invalid. Thanks for your contribution to ubuntu and don't hesitate to open new bug reports in the future.
