Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-avivo

Source package name: xserver-xorg-video-avivo
Source package version number to sync: 0.0.999+git20070805-1
Where to sync from: Debian experimental main

The present version 0.0.1-0ubuntu3 is severely outdated and practically useless. The Debian version is up-to-date and useful for those who would like to test out the driver and help its development.

All Ubuntu changes have been applied in Debian (the Debian package was based on the Ubuntu package).

I have tested building the Debian package in a Gutsy pbuilder.

The changes in the package are too many to list here. Basically the old version hardly works on any cards, while the new version is quite useable for many cards.

This package is included for testing only, and only makes sense if it is reasonably up-to-date with the current development version. It is only used by people who would know what they are doing, and not for production use. Installing the package does nothing to your system, you would have to manually configure xorg.conf to use it.

I think the release of this package must be treated a little outside the normal freeze exception process. The alternative to not update it should be to remove it from the distribution, which would not be fair for the upstream developers and the Ubuntu users who want to help them.

i'm happy with this, if there are no ubuntu changes to keep, due to the out-of-dateness of the package, which makes it useless.

The only source code change in the old package (+#include <stdint.h> in xorg/avivo_i2c.c) has been applied upstream. The rest of the old diff is packaging. The Debian package was based on the old Ubuntu package from what I can see from its changelog. The Debian package has been extended with the Debian xsfbs xorg build and packaging stuff.

Agreed. The 0.0.1 -avivo was really just a placeholder added mostly for curiosity's sake, whereas this 0.0.999 version is actually somewhat useful as a driver. There is nothing that depends on the 0.0.1 driver. I've re-subscribed motu-uvf.

bryce, why'd you resubscribe motu-uvf? two of us have ack'd it, and we're waiting on ubuntu-archive to do the sync. MOTU UVF team has nothing left to do...
