Bug Description

I'm running gutsy and just upgraded to 2.6.22-10-generic - 2.6.22-10.30. Now when I try to suspend, my sound fails to work upon resume. After resuming, the speaker icon indicates sound is muted. When I click to unmute, the volume level show 0%. But, even after raising the volume level, nothing plays. Sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart does not bring sound back. I have to reboot.

I have a Dell E1505 laptop with core 2 duo, with an intel HDA sound card.

Same problem on my Samsung X60p. No sound after suspend, but I could get it back by reloading snd_hda_intel:

# modprobe -r snd_hda_intel
# modprobe snd_hda_intel

Give it a try!

But 2.6.22-10 has introduced some more sound issues, which are discussed in other bug reports...

Dorian Scholz (dorianscholz) wrote :

I could actually automate this process very easily by blacklisting the snd_hda_intel module in
/etc/hibernate/blacklisted-modules

or if you are using acpi add the snd_hda_intel to the MODULES line in
/etc/default/acpi-support

So, for me the solution to this whole problem was to compile ALSA from the current snapshot source.
Namely:
alsa-driver-hg20070823
alsa-lib-hg20070823
alsa-utils-hg20070816
I just downloaded these three from
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/alsa/snapshot/
compiled and installed the driver with
# ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel,usb-audio
# make install
and the other two with (first lib, then utils)
# ./configure
# make install
rebooted and all was good...
This resolved the 'no sound after suspend' as well as the whole bunch of other problems introduced with 2.6.22-10.
So this solved:
- sound output was very low, only after cranking up all sliders I was able to hear that there actually was sound...
- missing mixer controls, only three were left..
But still the internal mic is not working and the internal speakers don't shut up when I plug in a headphone!

Good luck to the rest of you

Bug still present on 2.6.22-14 Benq S52 snd_intel8x0

Problem was there in 2.6.20-15 in Edgy too but was fixed with uswsusp.

I also have a problem that the indicator light (power on blue/suspend to ram orange) turns off after resume as well. Sound comes back after s2ram but the light remains off.

Try installing linux-backports-modules, ALSA 1.0.15 has better suspend/resume support.

If I use Pulse audio to 'Move Stream' to other (non-ALSA) channels (such as RTP Multicast) then do:

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils force-reload

....it usually comes good. If I fail to move the Streams before the force reload Audio is usually broken until a restart (I think that is why it occasionally doesn't recover).
