Hi,
I had the same problem and finally solved it by just installing linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-10-generic, so check out if it's not your case too.

The problem is that there is no metapackage for linux-ubuntu-modules to keep them up to date with the kernel automatically, one must do it manually.

And I forgot:
Check your mixer then, after update the "speaker" slider in KMix was set to the minimum, don't know why.

Hi,

# apt-show-versions | grep ubuntu-modules
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-10-generic/gutsy uptodate 2.6.22-10.23

it's installed and mixer is to the max. The strange thing is that mixers return just "Master" and "PCM" volume. Before kernel update they return more "volumes-voice".

Create a new user and see if the new user has sound. If the new user has sound then I had a similar problem after an upgrade and the fix was to delete/rename the asoundrc and asoundrc.asoundconf.conf files in my own home directory and sound came back immediately.
