Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm using the latest 100-series nvidia driver that has recently been added to gutsy in the nvidia-glx-new package.

When I turn on the compiz desktop effects, everything works nicely until I attempt to log out, shut down, or switch back to metacity. When I do this, X becomes unresponsive (keystrokes and mouse clicks appear to do nothing, though the mouse pointer does move!), and I can't do a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace or Ctrl-Alt-F1. In fact, the only way out is to simply power the machine off with the power switch (I haven't had a chance to install an ssh server and connect remotely when this happens).

This is on a Thinkpad T61P running gutsy with all the updates as of 10AM EDT on the us.archive.ubuntu.com mirror.

This is a bug in the new nvidia driver. You can use the 'nvidia-glx' version or Xgl to work around it.

Well, I can't use nvidia-glx, since it doesn't support my hardware ;-)

For the time being, I'll just use metacity rather than futz with Xgl.

This driver is still messed up but we've worked around it in compiz.
