Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

The vpn functionnally is important for Network manager.
Why aren't the packages :
network-manager-openvpn,
network-manager-pptp,
network-manager-vpnc
not part of the main repositories (as opposed to universe) and maintained by the same group of people.
These packages need to remain in sync with NetworkManager.

Because NetworkManager is a inderect dependant of Ubuntu desktop, it is a impossible to remove.
Installing a the svn copy is hazardous and could lead to a lot of problems given the importance of that package.

Thanks for taking the time to report a bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

The goal I think is to provide reasonable support of VPNs in NetworkManager, which is already largely achieved with the plugins in universe as they are: they are pretty up to date (and a daily build is available), and clearly downloadable if the event a user needs them.

If you have a use case in particular where a VPN other than pptp (which is already in main, since required by a number of DSL users to connect to the Internet) is clearly required, please open a separate bug, affecting the plugin itself, so the issue can be looked into.
