Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

On booting up the Gutsy Tribe 5 gutsy-desktop-amd64.iso livecd installer, the screen goes blank and I can not change to a terminal for command line access.

The screen blanks out when X starts. This happens in both regular graphical install mode and also in safe mode. The system boots up and I can see all the kernel boot messages if I remove "splash quiet" from the command line. Though once it hits the X startup, the screen blanks out and I cannot recover the display on the LCD or on an attached monitor.

The system is a Dell Inspiron 6400 with an ATI Mobility x1400. Since I can't see the screen to type anything, I can not supply an X.log at this time. I will download the alternate installer and try to get a lspci list for some more information.

Which version of xserver-xorg-video-vesa are you using? This should be fixed in current Gutsy, although not in tribe-5.

most likely a dupe of bug 89853, which is now fixed.

Whichever version of xserver-xorg-video-vesa that is in the installer for Tribe 5 AMD64 is what is being used.

After reviewing bug 89853, I am not convinced this is a duplicate. The problem in that bug is that X will not start, but the console is still visible. This bug is that when X tries to start, the LCD panel completely shuts down and nothing is visible on it. You can't exit the xorg.conf file due to nothing being displayed on the screen.

For some more info, I am including the lspci output from a Feisty install I was able to put on the system.

xserver-xorg-video-vesa was updated after tribe-5. Please try a recent daily-live (which nowadays are beta candidates).

It's been a few weeks with no response. Closing as out of date. Please test against Gutsy-final and reopen with the requested info if the issue is still present.
