Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-i810

Further to:

Bug #63560 and Bug #6271 I have been asked to file another bug report about my machine.

I have a Dell Inspiron 510m with a 1400x1050 screen. As long as I have used Ubuntu on it (since Hoary) I have not had native support of my resolution. I have had to install 855resolution and then 915resolution (when it superseded 855resolution).

I am now using Gutsy Tribe 5.

I was asked in Bug #63560 :
"Aaron - please submit a new bug report with information regarding your system and Xorg setup before you installed 915resolution. Files needed are - /etc/X11/xorg.conf , /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the full output of 'sudo lspci -vvnn'. Thanks in advance."

Here is that bug.

These files are after a dpkg-reconfigure of xserver. Please let me know if they are not sufficient and I need to reinstall Gutsy Tribe 5.

I did not really know what I was doing in the reconfigure process.

Aaron, make sure you have xserver-xorg-video-intel installed, remove (or disable) 915resolution, all tell "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" to use "intel" driver instead of "i810" (the latter is shown by default but it's the one that needs 915resolution).

IIRC, xserver-xorg-video-intel is going to supersede xserver-xorg-video-i810 very soon.

Waiting for Aaron's ACK about new intel driver working OK.

As a side note: the intel driver works fine on my Dell Latitude D505 although currently the i810 driver is selected by default on the live cd.

Intel gives me 1400x1050 without 915resolution!

Thanks a lot Alex.

Okay, so the problem must be that i810 is used in a Gutsy install on my machine when it should be "intel". I am fairly certain about this, given that it didn't have 1400x1050 when I installed Gutsy. I can, however, reinstall Tribe 5 this weekend and attach the above files again.

Would it be better to keep this bug report or close it and open a new "Gutsy installs i810 instead of intel driver on Intel 855GM" bug? We could change the name and description of this one, I suppose.

Thanks for your assistance.

Aaron, if you don't mind, I think we should close this one so other people find the solution and file/search another bug about intel being the default.

Thanks for the ACK!

It works with newest intel driver since Feisty.

It seems that "intel" is not without its issues. It seems to make the system a lot slower and things like Suspend aren't working. Until that is sorted, I can see why it isn't the default.

Also, I don't know if this bug should be closed. The bug is that -i810 can't do 1400x1050 natively. It can't. The fact that a "competing" driver can do it doesn't really stop it being a bug - especially when i810 is still the default and hasn't been superseded.

Of course... it isn't likely to be fixed, but there isn't a WONTFIX anymore.

I don't have strong feelings about having this bug open until the intel driver is officially the default.

Feel free to reassign xserver-xorg-video-i810 package and reopen or let me know and I'll do it.

Changed.

If intel isn't meant to be the default, I suppose that there is no point filing a bug that it isn't the default on my machine. I guess that I just wait for intel to stabilise enough to replace i810.

Thanks again.

Could you please recheck it with latest Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 or the Live CD? 915 resolution has become obsolete in Gutsy since the new Intel driver is used per default.

I'll mark this as fix released because there isn't a WONTFIX.

The -i810 driver still does need 915resolution, but the -i810 driver is no longer the default (-Intel is). Therefore it is unlikely that any enhancements will be added to the -i810 driver. The Intel driver does NOT need 915resolution in order to have a 1400x1050 resolution by default.
