Bug Description

If I suspend my Sony PCG-SRX51P/B, then it appears to close down fine. However, when the power button is pressed to restart, the X session does not restart but fails and apparently terminates. In any event, a new X starts with the login screen. This is a consistent action, there is no randomness, so it is completely reproducible -- for me anyway.

I am not sure if Bug #38130 relates in any way. Similarly Bug #86099 and Bug #110102.

I can supply any extra information as needed.

The machine is running Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn fully up-to-date with updates.

Attached is the dmesg immediately after a failed attempt at a restart from a suspend.

I also just tried hibernate and it has the same problem as suspend. Closing down is fine but when a restart happens, the screen saver appears momentarily then crashes, X reinitializes and set ups the login window.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for the kernel version the bug was submitted about. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I recently tried to install Gutsy on this machine and that was essentailly a disaster -- Gutsy appears unable to boot from the install CD-ROM (cf. Bug #141646) and if an installation is forced via doing a safe boot, it only works in 800x600 mode. I therefore reinstalled Feisty from my original install CD-ROM and then updating and now suspend seems to work fine. In fact this machine has never worked better. Feisty rules, Gutsy sucks :-)
