Bug Description

Binary package hint: acpi

Acer Aspire 1642z laptop with Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 5 and Kernel 2.6.22-10-generic.
The cpu fan is always on. System monitor shows that CPU is at 100% without any app running.

With command sudo /etc/init.d/acpid stop typed in a terminal the percentage of CPU usage is down to normal levels and cpu fan stops.
With sudo /etc/init.d/acpid start the level raises to 100% again and fan starts to spin.
Also the battery level has decreased from 1h 30 min to 55 min.

Sorry for my bad english.

Hi!

Thank you for your bug report.
In order to help us process the bug, we will need some extra information :
- In a console, type "lspci -vvnn" and attach here the output
- The same for "uname -a", "cat /proc/version_signature" and "cat /var/log/dmesg"
- The same for "sudo dmidecode"
- Just after having booted, can you give us the output of the following command "cat /var/log/kern.log.0"

Thanks!

Thanks!

This _might_ be related to bug no. 11561, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evms/+bug/115616 . I had the same problem with the cpu always being full-on. This is because of a problem with evms.

sudo aptitude remove evms

in a terminal solved the problem for me.

In a terminal, type

dmesg

If the output from dmesg shows lots of lines like this:

[ 2860.300000] device-mapper: ioctl: error adding target to table
[ 2860.300000] device-mapper: table: 254:0: linear: dm-linear: Device lookup failed

then evms is likely to be the problem, and it does not have to have anything to do with acpi. Try the above command and see if it helps.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

*This is an automated response*

This bug report is being closed because we received no response to the previous request for information. Please reopen this if it is still an issue in the actively developed pre-release of Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty . To reopen the bug report simply change the Status of the "linux" task back to "New".
